Description
You are purchasing two angle scale illuminators for various models of Theodolites made by Wild. You can tell if these illuminator fit your Theodolite by checking the images in the description. This type fits Theodolites that have a small aperture where light directed by a mirror enters as shown in the "detail images" of a Wild Theodolite mixed in with the pictures of the illuminators. Note that the Theodolite is NOT included, you are buying only the illuminators. Two other images show the illuminator installed in the theodolite. Note that the aperture that this illuminator plugs into usually has a "mirror assembly" plugged into it, you just pull out on the mirror assembly to remove it and install the illuminator in it's place. Note also that most Wild Theodolites have two such aperture and mirror assemblies, one for the azimuth scale and one for the zenith scale. While you can use a single illuminator, swapping it back and forth, it's much easier to use two illuminators instead. For this reason this sale is for two illuminator units.
The illuminator lamp is battery powered, the internal replaceable batteries will provide several hours of illumination before they need to be replaced. To turn the lamp on or off you simply twist the back cover, clockwise turns it on CCW turns it off. Unscrewing it all the way provides access to the battery for replacement. A soft "ring" of light visible from the "outside" is produced whenever the unit is on. This light is to remind you to turn the lamp off when your not using it. The uniform light produced by this unit is light green in color, which makes it easy to read the angle scale(s) in the Theodolite.
The angle scales in these incredible old Theodolites are beautiful, it's fun to practice your skill at reading the angles with repeatable precision. The illuminators are useful when your actually making measurements in the field, or if your just showing the angle scales to a friend. With the illuminator lamp you no longer have to mess with mirrors to get the best light on the scales. The light is bright enough to be used outdoors, but not too bright for indoor or nighttime use. It's just right for reading angles to a high precision, indoors or out.
Makes a great gift for anyone you know that has a collection of Theodolites or Transits, it's very likely they have models from both Kern and Wild.
Each illuminator uses two 2032 batteries, which are supplied installed in the device.
